How to Care for Your Trees Throughout the Year

May 18, 2023

Trees play an important role in our environment, providing shade, oxygen and habitat for wildlife. Taking proper care of your trees can help ensure their health and longevity. Here are a few tips for caring for your trees throughout the seasons…

Summer

Watering: Trees need water to grow and thrive, especially in the hot summer months. During drought conditions, you should water your trees deeply and regularly. A slow-release watering method, such as a soaker hose, is best for providing trees with the right amount of water.

Fertilising: Fertilising is a key component of summer tree care. Trees need essential nutrients to grow and produce leaves, flowers, and fruit. Fertiliser helps improve soil fertility, leading to increased crop yields and better-quality produce.

Autumn

Preparing for Winter: During autumn, it's essential to start preparing your trees for winter. This includes removing any dead or damaged branches and protecting them from winter conditions, such as storms, wind and ice. You can wrap tree trunks with burlap or other protective material to keep them warm and dry during the winter.

Planting New Trees: Autumn is also an excellent time to plant new trees. The cooler temperatures and increased rainfall provide ideal conditions for new tree growth. Before planting a new tree, select a location with good drainage and the right amount of sunlight.

Winter

Checking for Damage: During the winter months, it's important to check your trees for any damage that may have occurred. This may include broken branches, cracks in the trunk, or damage from wildlife.

Snow and Ice Removal: If you live in an area that experiences snow or ice, remove these from your trees to prevent branches from breaking. You can do this using a broom, rake, or snowblower.

Spring

Pruning: Pruning is an important part of tree care, especially in the spring. Pruning helps to remove any dead or damaged branches, improve the tree's shape, and encourage healthy new growth.

Mulching: Mulching is a gardening technique in which a layer of organic or inorganic material is spread over the soil surface to conserve moisture, regulate soil temperatures and suppress weeds.

Taking care of your trees year-round is vital for health and longevity. By following these tips, you can help ensure your trees remain healthy and vibrant for many years to come.
