Guide To Transplanting A Lemon Tree

May 15, 2023

Growing lemon trees in your garden can be extremely rewarding; not only are they aesthetically pleasing, but they also yield delicious fruit, often throughout the entire year. If for any reason you need to move a lemon tree to a new location in your garden, we’ve got you covered! Keep reading for our tips for successfully transplanting a lemon tree so that it thrives in its new home.

  1. Selecting a new location
The first step in transplanting a lemon tree is selecting an appropriate new location; citrus trees love the sun and require maximum exposure to thrive. Soil quality is another important factor, and the ideal location will offer well-draining soil which doesn't retain significant water or drainage. If possible, try to find a spot that also offers protection from strong winds or heavy rain.

  2. Preparing the soil
Once you’ve chosen a location for your lemon tree, the next step is to prepare the soil. Start by removing existing weeds or grass and turning over the top layer of soil with a shovel or garden fork. Add organic compost or other nutrient-rich material to help ensure your tree has all the nutrients it needs to survive in its new environment.

  3. Digging up your tree
Now comes the difficult part—digging up your lemon tree! To start, dig around the base of your tree in a circle, leaving a perimeter around the trunk, and continue until you have enough space to slip a spade underneath the root and lift it from its former home. Be sure not to leave any roots behind – if necessary, use scissors or pruners to cut through any remaining roots before lifting the tree.

  4. Transplanting
After removing your lemon tree from its old home, transplant to its new location by digging a hole about twice as wide and just as deep as your lemon tree's root ball. Place the tree inside the hole, making sure it sits at ground level with no exposed roots, and fill in around it with soil before watering. Cover up this newly planted area with mulch in order to protect the roots from extreme temperatures while also helping retain moisture levels within the surrounding soil to aid its growth after being transplanted.
